Dilatation and evacuation (D&E)

Dilatation and evacuation (D&E)

You’ll be with us in the clinic for about four hours.  You’ll be in the ward with other clients until your procedure starts.  While in the ward, you’ll be asked to dissolve two small pills under your tongue.  These pills prepare the uterus and may cause some cramps and bleeding.

After an hour you’ll be treated in the treatment room while lying in a gynaecology chair.  We advise you to have this procedure with anaesthesia.  We will give you a light anaesthetic via an IV inserted in your arm.

During the procedure, the doctor will insert a speculum in your vagina to look at the cervix.  Once this is in place, the pregnancy will be removed from the uterus.  This procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes.  We simultaneously monitor progress with an ultrasound.

You’ll need to recover for a short time afterwards in a bed. You may experience some cramps like those during your period.  You are allowed to eat or drink and normally can leave the clinic after about an hour.

This procedure is very safe.  There is a very small chance of infection of the uterus but to prevent this happening, we give you antibiotics during the procedure.

Be aware that you can become pregnant straightaway after the procedure.  If you wish, we can fit an IUD or implant immediately after the abortion.  Please ask about this during our chat or look  at anticonceptie.nl for more information.

Pros

  • Performed by expert doctors and nurses
  • Minimal bleeding afterwards
  • Not very painful but if necessary, painkillers available
  • Option for having the procedure under anaesthetic

Cons

  • You’ll be in the clinic for half a day with other clients and no family/friends
  • If you opt for an anaesthetic, you have to fast beforehand and you shouldn’t drive for 24 hours afterwards
