Which method of contraception suits you best?

Are you looking for contraception but not sure which method to choose? There are many types to choose from, e.g. the pill, an IUD (coil), an implant or hormonal injection. We are happy to discuss the various pros and cons of each method in our clinic. We can also discuss this when you are here for an abortion. You don’t have to decide on the spot; you can take your time to think it over and contact us for a follow up appointment. We have the IUD and other birth control methods available in our clinic.

Costs

You can sometimes claim for birth control on your insurance. You can check with your insurance company whether this is the case for you. However, quite often you will not be able to make a claim. In that case, you will have to pay for the IUD or implant, including the actual placement and check-up after four weeks. If you would like to get an idea of the costs, just give us a call.

IUD

An IUD (also known as a coil) is fitted in the uterus.

There are copper IUD’s (without hormones) and hormonal IUD’s. They are both very reliable forms of birth control.

Bij koperspiralen zonder hormonen heb je iedere maand je menstruatie, die kan soms iets heviger zijn dan je gewend bent. Een koperspiraal werkt 5 tot 10 jaar, maar je kunt hem natuurlijk altijd eerder laten verwijderen.

Hormoonspiralen bevatten hormonen, maar veel minder dan bijvoorbeeld de pil. Meestal is je menstruatie met een hormoonspiraal minder hevig dan je gewend bent en sommige vrouwen worden helemaal niet meer ongesteld. Dit is niet slecht voor je lichaam. Hormoonspiralen werken 5 tot 6 jaar, maar kunnen natuurlijk ook altijd eerder verwijderd worden als je dat wil.

Een spiraal voel je niet zitten. Je zou wel de touwtjes van het spiraal die diep in de vagina zitten kunnen voelen. Sommige mannen kunnen die voelen met hun penis tijdens seks. Hier zou je geen last van moeten hebben. Ook doet een spiraal geen pijn tijdens vrijen. Je lichaam moet soms wel een beetje wennen aan het spiraal en daarom kan je soms na plaatsing wat meer buikkramp hebben dan je gewend bent.

Contraceptive Implant

The contraceptive implant contains hormones but fewer than say, for example those in the pill. It is placed under the skin in your upper arm. You can’t see it once it is fitted. If you stroke your arm, you can feel it.

Some women find that their periods become irregular, lighter or even stop altogether. This is nothing to worry about.

De eerste dag na het plaatsen, kun je een beurs gevoel in je bovenarm hebben. Ook kun je een blauwe plek hebben. Dit verdwijnt in een aantal dagen.

Het staafje beschermt 2 tot 3 jaar tegen zwangerschap, maar kun je ook altijd eerder laten verwijderen. Na het verwijderen hou je een heel klein litteken over van ongeveer 2 mm aan de binnenkant van je bovenarm.

Emergency Contraception

You can buy the morning-after pill over the counter from the chemist or pharmacist. The morning-after IUD is more reliable than the morning-after pill. You should use either of the morning-after methods as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

De morning-afterpil Levenorgestrel kun je innemen tot 72 uur (3 dagen) na de onveilige seks. De morning-afterpil EllaOne tot 120 uur (5 dagen). Ze werken helaas niet altijd en soms word je toch nog zwanger.

Betrouwbaarder dan de morning-after pil is het morning-after spiraal. Deze kun je ook bij ons in de kliniek laten plaatsen. Dit is een gewoon koperspiraal dat je tot 120 uur (5 dagen) na onveilige seks plaatst. Je kunt vervolgens het spiraal nog 5 tot 10 jaar laten zitten omdat het je dan beschermt tegen zwangerschap, of je kunt het laten verwijderen als je ongesteld bent geworden.

With the copper IUD your monthly period may sometimes be a little heavier than usual. The copper IUD works for 5 to 10 years but you can, of course, have it taken out earlier.

The hormonal IUD contain fewer hormones than, for example, those in the pill. It may make your periods lighter and for some women, they stop altogether. This is nothing to worry about and is not bad for your body. Hormonal IUD’s work for five to eight years but can always be taken out earlier.

If properly fitted, you don’t feel the IUD. You may feel the little strings of the IUD deep in your vagina. Some men may feel these with their penis during sex. The IUD does not cause you any pain during sex. You should have no problems with this method. Your body may need to get used to the IUD and, after having the IUD fitted, you may experience some abdominal cramps.

After the implant is fitted, you might feel a little bit bruised the next day. This feeling will disappear after a few days.

The implant prevents pregnancy and is effective for two to three years. You can of course have it removed earlier. The removal will leave a very small scar on the inside of your upper arm.

The morning-after pill Levonorgestrel can be taken up to 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex. The morning-after pill ellaOne can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after. They unfortunately do not always have the desired effect, still resulting in a pregnancy.

More reliable is the morning-after IUD. We can fit this in our clinic. This is the normal (copper) IUD which can be fitted up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex. You can leave the IUD in for between five and 10 years which will give you protection against pregnancy or you can have it removed after you have had your period.
